Our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week is a captain for the Chico High girls soccer team, one that has yet to taste defeat this season.
"This season has been probably one of the best season's. Everybody has really put in the work and put in the heart. We have a such a strong solid group of girls this year," said Sophia Leiker.
Right in the middle of that group is midfielder Sophia Leiker.
She's a four-year varsity player at Chico High and this season, along with 2 teammates, Leiker is a captain. She takes a liking to that role.
"I love being a captain and I'm surrounded by Shelby Hiller and Kendall Howell, and all three of us work really well together. People are comfortable coming up to us and I think that's really important for me as a captain to be that leader that will kind of listen to everyone else, it's a honor," said Leiker.
And on the pitch, these Chico Panthers are heard loud and clear.
"We want to win the CIF Northern Section title like we did last year, finish that out and that's been our goal since the beginning of the season, right from tryouts, and right from then we knew that was our team goal for the whole year," said Leiker.
Much like on the field, Sophia sets high goals in the classroom. She carries a 4.6 weighted GPA.
Her favorite subject is physics and she wants to become an engineer.
If soccer is in future, that's just fine with her, but she says success in life starts with a solid academic resume.
"Ever since I was little I've always been told to do my personal best and I've been really academically motivated since I was a little kid. Ijust want to continue that because I know academics is what's really going to get me far in life."
