Subway Scholar Athlete Samantha Chaney has been on the fast track to success in her four years at West Valley High School and her hard work has prepared her for the next leg of life's journey. Action News Now's Ross Field filed this report.

"Running it just kind of clears my mind," says Samantha Chaney. "If I'm ever stressed out, I know I can come to the track and I won't be."

West Valley's Samantha Chaney is senior leader in the classroom, as well as on the volleyball and track and field teams.

Samantha says competitiveness is the driving force behind her success.

"Ever since I was really little I was always really ambitious, I just wanted to be the best at everything, so that kind of set a foundation for me," said Chaney.

On the track she competes in several events.

"She was one of the top 300-hurdlers and 100-hurdlers in the section last year," said Scott Fairley, West Valley track and field coach. "She's also a really good triple jumper and she's on both of our relay teams."

Chaney also dished out 459 assists while helping lead the Eagles to a Northern Section Div. IV title in volleyball in the fall.

In the classroom, Chaney serves a senior class president and takes four AP courses.

Despite the busy schedule she carries a 4.47 weighted GPA.

"Sam just has the tremendous personality of an individual that you see doing everything the right way," said Fairley. "She puts in so much hard work and effort."

Chaney said she would like to attend either Sacramento State or San Diego State.

In her spare time she volunteers at Shasta Regional Medical Center. She'd like to become a Labor and Delivery Nurse.

"I think having a child is kind of like a miracle. I've seen how a child changes a couple's life, and I really want to be a part of that," said Chaney.

But first, she hopes to keep delivering for her school, on the track and in the classroom.

When it comes time for this Eagle to spread her wings, she'll leave behind a concise blueprint for future scholar athletes.

"Being a good student takes a lot of perseverance and determination. You really have to think about your future, you can't get off track."
