Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete hails from Gridley High School and she does more than just hold her own for the Bulldogs track and field team. Action News Now's Ross Field filed this report.
Go to any Gridley High School track and field meet and you're sure to notice her. Not because she wears bright shoes, or has a minion from "Despicable Me" as her phone case. You'll notice her because she throws the shot put, and boy can she throw it. In fact, Marisela Cardenas throws the 8.8-lb pound ball further than anyone in the Northern Section. This year Cardenas set a personal best by throwing the shot put 43-feet-5-inches. So why does she do it?
"Because I love the sport, I love the individual aspect of it. If I have a bad day I know it's because of me and I have to work harder for it and if I have a good day, I'm happy," said Cardenas.
Cardenas also throws the discuss and practices everyday. She sets an example for her teammates to follow.
"Marisela is the hardest worker I know," said Marin Spears, Gridley track and field athlete. "She's always out here putting in extra time in the weight room always putting extra throws, reps in, whatever she can do."
But for Cardenas, winning is not as important as you may think.
"It doesn't matter if I get first or not, as long as I beat myself, I'm okay with that, I like that," said Cardenas.
Spears says, "You get used to second place! Marisela is an inspiration to all of us on the track team of what we can become and she's just amazing."
Next year Cardenas will attend San Francisco State on a partial scholarship. She'll carry with her a good work ethic in the classroom as she possesses a 3.5 GPA. Graduating high school is one goal, the other?
"My dream is to go to the Olympics someday, I have to put in a lot of effort and hard-work, keep lifting, throwing and hopefully I'll make it," said Cardenas.
