Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week pins down opponents on the mat and swoops up good grades in the classroom, and as Action News Now's Ross Field reports, Chico High wrestler Kurtis Clem will soon be taking his talent to the big city.
To Kurtis Clem, there's nothing better than wrestling.
"Other sports are team sports and you have other people to rely on. In wrestling it's only you at the end of the day when you get your hand raised it's you and no one else." said Klem.
He's been grappling since the fifth grade and will continue to do so in college. Clem has accepted a scholarship to San Francisco State.
"It's a dream come true, I never thought I'd be here," said Klem. "It's close to home and my parents are super involved. If I were to go anywhere farther away then wouldn't be able to come support me and they deserve to come on the ride with me," said Clem.
A ride that's taking him from the country to the big city, but he says he's prepared for the change.
"You definitely have to be around the right people and stay focused because there is a lot of distractions but when you're around those same type of people who are on the same grind as you, it'll be easy," said Clem.
This Chico High senior is smart too, carrying a 3.5 GPA. Clem says he takes pride in getting a good education.
"It reflects on your discipline, your work ethic, you have to take pride in what you do you know learning expanding your brain, I think that's a huge thing," said Clem.
While at SFSU, Clem wants to major in dietetics and nutrtions. He says it'll help him become a better wrestler and one day he'd like to become a coach and give back to the sport that's given him so much.
"I don't think I could ever step away from it, it's in my blood now and I don't think I could ever give it away," said Clem.
