The Pleasant Valley High School volleyball team ran their win streak to 14 games on Wednesday with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) over Red Bluff. Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week is the heartbeat of the Lady Vikings. Kayla Joyce's specialty on the court is setting her teammates up for success. Action News Now's Ross Field filed this report.
If you are plugged into area high school sports, you know the name Kayla Joyce.
She All-Section in basketball and volleyball, having played varsity in both sports since her freshman year, but the junior readily lists academics, not athletics, as her top priority.
"Education is definitely my top priority, sports - they should be fun," said Joyce.
For her, sports are fun and so is watching her play.
This setter loves to make her teammates look good, which she does by the way at a blistering pace.
At the time of this clip, Joyce ranked fourth in the state in assists with 882. But she's not a one-trick pony. Joyce is also fourth in the state in aces with 111.
But here's the best part, she's humble, could careless about the stats. She worries about the team success, one that's 28-6 overall and eyeing a deep postseason run.
"I didn't know it until you told me that about the stats, but it's amazing to know it, and we're having a great season hopefully it's going to carry on to state playoffs," said Joyce.
Despite her volleyball success, Joyce says that basketball is her favorite sport.
"I take it more seriously and I put more time into it, and I believe I'm better at basketball," said Joyce.
She says basketball is her passion, but it doesn't end there.
She's very impressive in the classroom carrying a 3.85 GPA while taking two AP courses.
Her favorite subject is Science, and she already has her future mapped out.
"I want to be a forensics detective and I want to study chemistry, it's always fascinated me and I want to pursue it," said Joyce.
A young lady with her priorities straight, one of many reason why this Pleasant Valley Viking is our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week.
