This week's Subway Scholar Athlete is a young man who gives his all to Oroville High School. His name is Kahliel Wyatt and he can play and study with the best of them. Action News Now's Ross Field filed this report.
Oroville High School's Kahliel Wyatt plays football, runs track, but it's the roundball that has his heart.
"Basketball, I can do that all day every day, 24/7, go workout, go in the gym and shoot, that's just something I love to do," said Wyatt.
His dad put a basketball in his hand when he was two years old. Now he's become one of the best players in the area.
On Saturday, Wyatt led all scorers with 21 points in the Phil Bryant Northern Section All-Star Basketball Game at Pleasant Valley High School.
"I enjoyed it, just having fun with the guys. Some of the guys were like 'hey take this shot or do this or do that,' so you know I was just having fun feeding off what they were doing and it just went in my favor," said Wyatt.
But having the high in points wasn't the only highlight for Wyatt, who led the Tigers to a 24-4 record this year. At halftime he was awarded the game's scholarship.
Wyatt says, "I was really blessed to get that and I was really excited. I can buy books and stuff next year for college."
Wyatt will be taking his game to Tacoma Community College in Washington. He's fired up to play at the next level.
"All I've wanted to do is go play college ball, that's my main thing and even though it starts at a JC, hey that's where God led me to and I'm very thankful for that and to be playing basketball still," says Wyatt.
But Wyatt is more than just a basketball player with a bright future. He carries a 3.0 GPA and performs community service through various clubs at school including "Block O."
"We've painted fire hydrants, we've done a turkey drive and we went up and painted the 'O.' I feel like it's a good thing to give back to the community," says Wyatt.
A community that will surely miss watching him dominate opponents on the basketball court.
