Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week - Justin Abney

Many high school athletes play multiple sports, but few excel at every sport they play. For Enterprise's Justin Abney, it doesn't matter what field of play he steps on, he's a stand-out for two Hornets programs - football and basketball.

"I'm going to show up and I'm going to work hard, it's just something that I strive to do," said Abney.

Whether he's making dynamic plays on the football field. Or knocking down tough shots on the basketball court, Justin Abney possesses athletic instincts that keep him on top of his game.

"The type of athlete Justin is, we went to camp and we were missing one of our paddles for our ping pong table and he just picks up a wooden board, and this is the second time he's ever played ping pong in his life and he just ends up owning the table," said Izzy Matthews, one of Abney's football teammates.

"Good genes I guess, I've been able to just pick stuff up and get going with it," said Abney.

He's had to pick up something else this year, a new position.

After playing wide receiver season, Abney is now under center and this past Friday, Abney's first game at QB was a stellar one. In a win over Whitney, the senior rushed for 117 yards and 2 TD's. He also passed for 88 yards and another score.

"He makes our offense pretty dynamic," said Enterprise head football coach Darren Trueblood. "Incredible athlete, but I think even more so, what probably separates him from other guys is just that he's an incredible competitor."

Abney brings that competitiveness into the classroom as well where he carries a cumulative 3.4 GPA. He has dreams of making it to the next level, but the big question is, for which sport?

"I really enjoy both sports, I love football more than I ever have, but during basketball season I don't want to set the basketball down," said Abney.

While he doesn't know where he's going, or rather, what type of uniform he'll be wearing at the next level, he does know he enjoys learning about history and he's a natural leader, meaning one day he would most likely make a great coach.
