The Enterprise High School football team secured their third straight section title with a 31-0 victory over Pleasant Valley.
A big reason why was the play of big running back Izzy Matthews, who comes up large in the classroom as well.
Standing 6 feet 1 inch, weighing 210 pounds, senior Izzy Matthews is as physical as any running back in the Northern Section.
That's the way he likes it.
"If I'm headed out of bounds, I'm not stepping out, I'm taking somebody with me. If you punish someone as your stepping out of bounds, that just gets the whole entire team amped," said Matthews.
Embracing contact, firing up his teammates, Matthews is one of the area's best.
"Seeing how hard he works, how determined he is on every single run, it's a great thing to watch," said Nick Tomasin, linebacker for Enterprise High.
Matthews is even better on the big stage. In two playoff victories this season, he ran 71 times for 358 yards with 7 touchdowns. This workhorse paved the way to a third straight section title for Enterprise.
"Being able to be trusted in that position to take those kind of carries and to take that kind of load was a really cool thing," Matthews said. "It's been an amazing journey with the team, every team, every year, it's unbelievable, seriously."
"He just has a positive attitude in everything that he does, he's incredibly coachable," said Darren Trueblood, head football coach for Enterprise.
Not only is Matthews a coach's dream on the field, he's also a teacher's dream in the classroom.
Often times you can catch him on campus doing homework to help maintain his 3.7 GPA.
"My whole life I've just been focusing on school, school, school, because at the end of the day that's what's going to pay for my family when I get older," said Matthews.
"He's kind of a shining example of what we want out of our athletes here at Enterprise High School," added Trueblood.
He's a big running back with an even bigger future.
