This week's Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week scores high marks on and off the basketball court. Action News Now's Ross Field filed this report on Devan Howe.
According to his basketball coach, Devan Howe is a one-of-a-kind player.
"He works harder than anybody I've coached in probably the last seven years," said Central Valley basketball coach Jordan Freilich. "He's our go-getter, he's definitely our catalyst."
The Central Valley senior is the star of his team and he has the stats to prove it, averaging 19 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals per game. However, his true talent is being a team player.
"The scoring, I've stepped it up because I know that's something that needs to be done to help the team, but I like making that pass," said Howe.
"He would much rather score 8 or 9 points and have everyone else score 15 to 20 if that means we win by 10. I think that just kind of infected a lot of other people on our team in terms of us being unselfish," said Freilich.
It's not just Howe's team (the Falcons are 11-4) that benefits from his talents, he's teaching the next generation of players the right way to play the game.
"I do it for the younger kids coming up, to set an example for them," said Howe.
On top of basketball, Howe also aspires to be good in the classroom as he carries a 3.3 GPA.
"Having good grades makes you a well-rounded individual," said Howe.
He's dependable, the person you want on your team, or the person you would want to study with.
"He just exudes that confidence that I think kids and I think coaches just love being around," said Freilich.
