Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete is a young man from Las Plumas High School who is all about going the extra mile both on the track and in the classroom. Action News Now's Ross Field filed this report.
Las Plumas High School's Brian Hastings has a deep passion for running as he competes on both the Thunderbirds' cross country and track and field teams where he participates in the half-mile, mile and 2-mile events.
"I like racing, I like competing and I like running out on the trails, it's just relaxing," said Hastings.
Last year, as an eighth grader, Hastings ran in the Junior Olympics where he earned a medal for finishing fifth place in the 1500-meters.
"That was a big accomplishment for me, it was a great way to end the season," added Hastings.
This year, as a freshman, he continues to impress.
Hastings won the Butte View League in cross country and qualified for the state meet.
On the track scene, he owns the school record for the mile with a time of 4 minutes 34.15 seconds.
Bob Hastings has coached for 31 years and he says teaching his son is a breeze.
"He comes up with his workouts, we collaborate on that stuff, but he's self-taught, self-motivated and he really doesn't need me," said Bob Hastings.
But Brian doesn't only excel at running, he's also a hard-worker in the classrom where he carries a weighted 4.1 GPA.
While he may only be a freshman, Hastings already knows where he wants to go to college, Chico State.
"They're just a really strong program, hard-working guys and they're all so nice over there," said Hastings.
But of course that's all still a long ways ahead. So for now, Hastings will just continue to take it one step at a time.
