With school back in session it's time for Ross Field to start bringing you our weekly Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week segments. Our first winner is a man under center for Pleasant Valley, who's guided the Vikings to a very strong start to the football season.
Aaron Rodgers, Ryan Ratekin and Jordan Rodgers, just a few well-known quarterbacks to play for Pleasant Valley. They have a rich history of churning out solid signal callers.
The latest is Brandt Hughes, a young man who prefers to let his play do the talking.
"I'm not a big talkative guy yelling and screaming at everyone. I just try to be successful lead by example and do whatever I can to help this team," says Hughes.
Through two games, both blowout wins, Hughes has done just that, throwing for more than 300 yards while accounting for six touchdowns.
PV wide receiver Max Andersen describes what it's like to play with Hughes.
"He delivers such a beautiful pass. He makes the right read and then he puts the ball right where it needs to be, it's easy to catch, its got a great spiral and he's just a fun guy to be around."
But it's his ability to take care of the football that really pleases his coach.
"He's really taking care of the ball and love the fact that he's able to read and if something's not there he's not going to make a dumb decision," said Mark Cooley, Vikings head coach.
"I prepare to the best of my ability whether that's staying after practice, meeting with the coaches, going over the game plans doing whatever I can to help this team be the best that they can be," added Hughes.
That commitment stretches from the gridiron to the classroom where Hughes takes one AP course and carries a 3.9 GPA.
"I've always kept it upon myself to stay on top of my work never have any missing assignments, always turn my work in on time and work hard and respect my teachers," said Hughes.
A prolific passer who keeps his eyes in both the playbook and the textbook, while on a mission to prove he can also be considered a top PV QB.
