Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week likes to take life on the run. When a challenge comes his way he heads straight for it, both on the course and in the classroom. Action News Now's Ross Field has the story.
"Everything I do I want to do as well as I can so whatever it is, running, school or music, I know that I'm going to put in as much effort as I can to be the best that I can at whatever that is," said Ben Harper.
That effort certainly pays off for Ben Harper. The Trinity High senior takes four AP courses and maintains a 4.5 GPA. He runs cross country and track, while playing the drums, trombone and piano. His favorite subject is science but he enjoys learning about anything and that makes schoolwork fun.
"I think I'm generally interested in the subjects I'm taking so it's not really a burden for me, it's something that I enjoy doing," said Harper.
He enjoys running too, distance running. Harper is the reigning Northern Section cross country champion and he also captured the 3,200-meter title at the track finals in May.
On the course his mentality is no different from the classroom, he just wants to get better every day and he credits some of his success to Trinity High's surroundings.
"It really is one of my great passions. Being on trails in the mountains and all the trees, so many places to go and a lot of the hills to do hill work-outs on, so I think this is the best place I can be for my training," added Harper.
Harper wants to continue running at the next level, but he has yet to pick a college. Although prestigious universities like Yale have expressed interest in his abilities.
Wherever he goes and whatever he ends up pursuing, his maturity, dedication and motivation will help him stand-out. Those qualities have already separated him from the rest of his peers.
