Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week is a go-getter. It's useful then that Chico High School's Alyssa Hardesty is a volleyball setter because as Ross Field reports, it allows Alyssa to be where she is most comfortable, right in the middle.
Being a setter on a volleyball team usually comes without the glory of getting a kills, but that doesn't seem to bother Chico High School's Alyssa Hardesty, she finds glory in playing the position because she gets to set the table for her teammates.
"I get to be behind the scenes and do my thing and know that I played my part but I don't need all the attention," says Hardesty.
But Hardesty's play demands attention. She lead the Panthers in assists with 60, a big reason why Chico has started the season with a solid 5-2 record.
"I absolutely love this team! I already think we have some amazing chemistry, we're great friends off the court, great teammates together on the the court, and I think we're just going to have an amazing year," says Hardesty.
Hardesty is not only a key member on the volleyball team, but she's also a track and field athlete and aspires to be one of Chico's top students. After ending her junior year with a 3.3 GPA, Hardesty decided to step it up as a senior, just check out some her classes!
"I'm taking AP Goverment and Humanities, ROP Med, AP Stats and AP bio," Hardesty said. "I've always just loved challenging myself and to me, if you're not challenging yourself then you're not going anywhere."
Beyond the classroom and athletic fields, Alyssa performs community service by volunteering her time at area events. This past summer she helped out at Chico State's Ability First Sports Camp, a summer camp which provides recreation opportunities for youth with physical disabilities.
"All the kids are in wheelchairs, so to be able to see them play sports and everything, it's so amazing. The kids have so much fun," added Hardesty.
