SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - UC Santa Cruz officials say student protesters against tuition increases have cleared the west entrance to campus. But the protest is ongoing and the main gate is still blocked.

The university says on its website that protesters are marching Thursday evening from the west gate toward the main entrance, blocking cars from leaving.

The university issued an online alert telling people not to come to campus earlier Thursday because student protesters were blocking all access to campus.

On Tuesday, police arrested six protesters who shut down a highway for several hours by chaining themselves to bins filled with concrete placed in lanes.

The California Highway Patrol used jackhammers, saws and crowbars to unwind the tangle of chains and concrete. The suspects were arrested on suspicion of creating a public nuisance, failure to obey an officer and conspiracy.
