Awards were presented in Oroville this week to the winners of the Butte County Superintendent of Education's first-ever Juried High School Art Show.
THE awards ceremony and reception took place Thursday evening at the Butte County Office of Education, on Bird Street in Oroville.
More than 100 entrees were submitted from schools all over the county.
They were judged by Dr. Cris Guenter, Professor of Education at CSU, Chico, Retired Oroville High School AP Art Teacher David Tamori, and Action News Now News Anchor and arts advocate Linda Watkins-Bennett.
The Visual and Performing Arts Program is new to the Office of Education, and Superintendent Tim Taylor told educators, students and their families at the ceremony that art has had a significant impact on his life, and that he creates art himself.
The winner of best of show was Pleasant Valley High School Sophomore Ryann Woods, who submitted an expressive self portrait drawn in ink, with splashes of pink.
Kaeli Becvar of Inspire School of Arts & Sciences won First Place in the Pencil, Ink, Charcoal competition. Shelby Hardwick of Oroville High School was Second Place and Alex Hilsee of Inspire School of Arts & Science received Third Place.
Erica Placensia of Chico High School took Second Place in the Paint/Pastel category, Serena Myers of Chico High School took Second Place, and Jessie Ladd of Durham High School was third.
In the Mixed Media category Nicole Dully of Pleasant Valley High School won First Place, Shea O'Sullivan of Inspire School of Arts & Sciences received Second Place and Alexis Heyman from Chico High School won Third Place.
For Digital Photography First Place went to Callie Robinson of Chico High School, Second Place to Dora McKenzie of Inspire School of Arts & Sciences and Third Place to Taylor Shuman, also from Inspire.
And in the 3D Art competition Faith Champlin of Core Butte Charter School won First Place, Simeon Wortham of Chico High School received Second Place and Ben Sloop of Durham High School won Third Place.
