A Cal Fire official said Monday afternoon that the Boles Fire near the town of Weed has destroyed at least 75 structures and forced thousands of people to evacuate.
The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. and has reportedly damaged at least one school, a church and 75 other structures. More than 1,000 homes and businesses are threatened. The Red Cross has set up evacuation shelters at the Siskiyou County Fairgrounds in Yreka, and Mt. Shasta High School.
The fire has caused emergency road closures in Siskiyou County, including the closure of Interstate 5 northbound at South Weed and southbound at North Weed. U.S. 97 northbound is closed at Weed and southbound at County Road A-12. Both the northbound and southbound rest areas in Weed are closed due to a power outages.
According to Pacific Power Corporation nearly 7,769 customers are without power.
The fire is currently burning approximately 200 acres with 0 percent containment, and fire crews from California and Oregon have been called in to provide support.
