Streets Surrounding South City Park Re-Open After Suspicious Suitcase Scare

(UPDATE) 3:30 p.m.- The Redding Police Department has reopened the streets around the South City Park after a suspicious suitcase located outside the Redding Library prompted a precautionary evacuation. The streets were reopened around 2:30 p.m.

According to the department, the suitcase was empty and didn’t contain any hazardous material. There wasn’t any indication of threats made to the library prior to the incident.

(UPDATE) 1:38 p.m.- City Of Redding officials have stated in a press release this afternoon a suspicious, black hard-side suitcase was found near the entrance of the Redding Library around 10:30 a.m. this morning. Redding Police evacuated the Redding Library, the Redding Recreation Office and the South City Park as a precaution.

The Redding Police Department is still at the scene and the incident remains an ongoing situation, the previously mentioned facilities will be closed for the remainder of the day. They are expected to reopen tomorrow.

The Redding Police Department has issued a warning they will be closing all the areas surrounding the South City Park for a suspicious package found at the Redding Library.

The closures include the closing of Market Street at Parkview, Parkview to Grape, and Parkview at Lanning.

The Redding Police Dispatch stated the package was first found and reported to the department at 10:34 a.m. this morning and indicated a bomb squad team is en route.
