Street sweeper catches fire in Paradise

Two fire engines responded to an initial report of a garbage truck on fire on Elliot Road in Paradise just after 10 a.m. this morning. When fire crews arrived they found a city-owned street sweeper with its engine compartment fully engulfed in flames.

Cal Fire officials were able to extinguish the flames within minutes. Elliot road was closed for approximately 45 minutes as crews mopped up the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

There was one person driving the street sweeper at the time of the incident and although they were a little shaken afterwards the driver did not suffer any injuries.

Doug Carlson, Director of Public Works with the Town of Paradise, voiced his concerns after the incident because the street sweeper was recently purchased from a Sacramento based company and passed its initial tests late last week. Carlson said they will be contacting the Sacramento company this week to review the situation and address concerns raised by today’s incident.
