Chico Police issued a stern warning Wednesday to those thinking about taking part in a street racing event in the future: Don’t do it.

Police department representatives said that those caught racing would be issued a citation and be subject to a fine at the minimum. Maximum penalties include arrest, driver’s license suspension or having the vehicle impounded for up to 30 days.

Department officials said they have been receiving an uptick in complaints about groups meeting in neighborhoods, intent on racing through the streets. Citizens and business owners reiterated the sentiment at the latest Community Safety Meeting, the department reported.

Besides the danger of driving at high levels of speeds, officers said the illegal events are often breeding grounds for vehicle theft, trespassing, thefts, vandalism, intoxicated driving, littering, illegal vehicle modifications, curfew violations and noise complaints.
