SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Bird watchers are hailing the discovery of a nest of a threatened hawk species in a San Francisco Bay Area county.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (http://bit.ly/1bnJvpU) that a Swainson's hawk chick was recently seen hatching in the nest in Santa Clara County.

It's believed to be the first such sighting since the 1800s. Bird experts say the discovery suggests the hawk's populations may be recovering and expanding their breeding range.

The hawks migrate more than 6,000 miles each year from their winter home in Argentina. They are more common in the Central Valley.

The recent nest sighting was about 16 miles south of downtown San Jose.
