Butte County Sheriff’s deputies caused quite a buzz Wednesday when they nabbed a local bee thief after combing through evidence left at the scene.

Jacob William Spath, of Chico, was arrested without incident for theft of the bee hives.

Olivarez Honey Bees Inc. reported Feb. 4 that 64 bee hives were stolen from a property in Chico. Sheriff’s deputies reported that the thief used a forklift to steal the hives and a flatbed truck to transport the cargo because of the tire tracks left at the scene.

Investigators were able to identify the stolen bees based on the unique markings of the bees and the containers.

Police located the bees being rented out to an almond grower in Oakdale, CA.

Spath is not believed to be involved in or responsible for any other thefts at this time.
