Police are searching for a little boy they say was kidnapped by his father from Los Angeles area early Friday morning.

The toddler’s father, Abraham Vargas, 26, arrived at the apartment complex where his ex-girlfriend Beatrice Lopez lives in the 1000 block of Lorena Street around 6:30 a.m., in violation of a restraining order, police said.

As his mother was putting Edwin Vargas, 2, into a car seat, the father jumped into the car and drove away.

"The mother had loaded up her child in the vehicle and as she was retrieving the other child to load up the second child the suspect approached, pushed her out of the way and entered the vehicle and left the scene with his 2-year-old son in the rear seat," said LAPD Capt. Gary Lopez.

An Amber Alert has been issued.

The suspect is described as wearing a red shirt and jeans. The little boy is wearing a red sweatshirt and blue sweatpants.

Officials say he may be headed for Mexico, and California Highway Patrol and Border Patrol have been notified.

Lopez told NBC4 Abraham Vargas has threatened to take the toddler from her several times in the two years since the couple broke up, saying he would take the boy to Veracruz, Mexico.

Police said Abraham Vargas knew Lopez's routine and was lying in wait.

He is driving a 2004 Orange Nissan Quest with license plate 7CIN189. The minivan has tinted windows and body damage on the driver's side.
