SONORA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are looking into the possibility that arson was to blame for a fire at a Central California elementary school that destroyed a wing of classrooms.

School officials say the weekend fire at Sonora Elementary School caused more than $1.5 million in damage. Sonora is located in Tuolumne County about 60 miles east of Stockton.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but district Superintendent Leigh Shampain says it appears to have started in a trash can placed under the window of a fifth-grade classroom.

The blaze destroyed eight classrooms and damaged seven others.

The Modesto Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1c6ZuGQ) that the school had recently received new iPads, Apple Televisions, smartboards and projectors.

The district plans to bring in temporary classrooms.
