State wildlife officials make large shark fin bust in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - State wildlife officials say more than a ton of illegal shark fins has been seized from a vendor in San Francisco.

Lt. Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said 42-year-old Michael Kwong of Kwong Yip Inc. was cited for having 2,138 pounds of the fins, which violates California's ban, which went into effect last July.

Foy says investigators were led to Kwong during an investigation of an Emeryville restaurant cited for selling shark fin soup on Jan. 27.

Possessing shark fins, selling or trading them is a misdemeanor under California's law.

A message left at Kwong Yip Inc. seeking comment was not returned.
