State Senator Ted Gaines held a press conference in Redding Tuesday to discuss area crime rates.

Gaines held a press conference outside the Shasta County Courthouse just before noon Tuesday. Gaines spoke about his proposal to "gut" Senate Bill 1376 in efforts to combat crime and issues with AB-109.

Gaines proposed allowing the transfer of county jail inmates to other facilities in California or other states and also spoke about appropriating funds for jail beds, stressing the need for new legislation.

Gaines said "Legislation is critical because were in a critical state in Redding, and we need to take action. We need funding and there's not been adequate funding through this whole process with AB-109."

Nearly 2,000 Shasta County inmates have been released in the first six months of this year. Funding for personnel and out-of-state prosecutions were also mentioned as parts of Gaines proposed legislation.

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko and Redding Police Chief Robert Paoletti also spoke and reiterated Gaines' message about getting behind this legislation early.
