EDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) - A local state of emergency has been declared after a massive fire engulfed a New Jersey apartment complex across the Hudson River from New York City.

Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland says local schools will be closed on Thursday and access to roads will be restricted due to the huge fire at The Avalon at Edgewater, a four-story apartment building.

The blaze broke out around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and raged late into the night, forcing hundreds to evacuate. Residents were able to get out safely and there were no reports of injuries.

Authorities cordoned off some streets around the burning building, but no major traffic problems have been reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
