A SpaceX capsule is headed to the International Space Station with a brand new docking port to benefit future crews.
The SpaceX company launched its unmanned Falcon rocket Sunday morning from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The rocket hoisted the Dragon supply ship, packed with more than 5,200 pounds of gear, including the big docking port. The shipment should reach the space station Tuesday.
The delivery is more urgent than usual. A Russian cargo ship spun out of control and went down in April. And last October, an Orbital Sciences craft was destroyed in a Virginia launch accident. This newest Dragon is carrying replacements for items lost in the botched missions.
Minutes after liftoff, SpaceX will try to land the discarded first-stage booster rocket on an ocean platform. Previous attempts failed.
