MCALLEN, TX - United States Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley saved a 2-year-old that was left behind by smugglers early Monday evening.

The 2-year-old girl was taken into custody along with a group of 14 illegal immigrants in small town near the Texas border.

Immigrants in the group told agents they did not know who the child belonged to and that they first encountered the toddler when they were led to a raft where the child was sitting alone.

Once on the American side, the smuggler handed the child to one of the adults in the group and returned to Mexico. The group was then apprehended by Border Patrol agents a short time later.

A CBP agent was able to locate a birth certificate in the child’s belongings along with a piece of paper with a name and phone number. The same information was also written on the child’s shirt. The birth certificate identified the little girl as a citizen of El Salvador.

The child appeared to be healthy, unharmed and has been placed in foster care.

Contact was made with the child’s mother who stated that a “friend” was supposed to reunite the child with her.
