The days of hunting for change to pay for parking meters in downtown Chico will soon be over.
On Tuesday night the Chico City Council approved new smart parking meters designed to save Chico money and make downtown parking a little easier. The city plans to install 450 smart meters on downtown streets and 323 parking lot meters.
The new meters will give people the options of paying with debit and credit cards, possibly even cell phones, rather than coins. The project will cost $320,000, including purchase and installation, but is expected to save the city roughly $20,000 a year by cutting the costs associated with collecting coins.
City Officials say there is no plan to update the cost of parking to fund the project and the project should is set to get underway within the next year.
