A SkyWest Airlines spokesperson confirmed Thursday that the airline will stop serving Chico in December, leaving Butte County without a commercial airline service.
Marissa Snow, SkyWest's communications director, said the airline's decision to cancel the service was made because of poor performance in the Chico market. Snow said, Chico SkyWest employees will have access to opportunities with SkyWest at other locations.
The Chico-San Francisco service SkyWest provides for United Airlines will be discontinued on December 2. Passengers who have a trip planned out of Chico after December 2 will be contacted for re-accommodation.
The City of Chico released a statement Thursday afternoon, saying they were informed by the airline that the route had become unprofitable due to increasing aircraft maintenance costs, fuel costs and most significantly, new government regulations regarding the use of airline pilots.
SkyWest canceled their Modesto service in June, sparking discussion that Chico's service would be the next to go.
