Sierra snowpack still slightly above average, premature melt statewide possible

Officials conducted a monthly snow survey in El Dorado County, California on Tuesday, revealing the Sierra snowpack remains just above average.

The statewide snowpack, however, was at 83 only percent of average.

Experts have blamed poor precipitation totals in February for the shortage in snow.

"When you have only one storm event in February, this is how you end up," said California Cooperative Snow Survey Chief Frank Gehrke.

Californians can still hope for a precipitation miracle this week, when the National Weather Service says changing weather patterns promise to send a series of storms over the state.
