LOS ANGELES (AP) - A cruise ship that saw an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus has departed Los Angeles as scheduled following an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

City News Service reports Carnival's Crown Princess embarked to the Mexican Riviera Sunday afternoon after sanitation protocols were completed on the ship and its San Pedro terminal.

The CDC said 172 of the more than 4,100 people aboard fell ill during a previous month-long cruise to Tahiti. The victims began to show signs of the gastrointestinal sickness a few days into the voyage and were treated on the ship.

In April, 129 people on the same ship contracted norovirus during a seven-day cruise off the California coast.

Symptoms of norovirus include vomiting, diarrhea, fever and body aches.
