Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Charles Robert Jones, 30, of Shingletown for making a false report.

Deputies reported, Thursday evening Jones called police and said his vehicle was stolen from his home in the 7500 block of Arbor Drive in Shingletown. Jones said his two young children were inside the car when it was stolen by an unknown suspect.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office dispatched several deputies who responded with emergency lights and sirens. Over 30 law enforcement officers were called in to help, including the California Highway Patrol helicopter.

Deputies said Jones’ initial report of auto-theft and kidnapping did not match with what witnesses said.

A deputy spotted the vehicle and performed a traffic stop near Highway 44 and the Shingletown Store.

Jones’ two children were inside the vehicle along with Rebecca Martinez, who deputies confirmed is the mother. Deputies confirmed Martinez’s explanation that she picked up her children from a family member’s home.

The children were unharmed and in “good spirits.”

Shasta County Sheriff’s deputies report Jones lied during his initial report in the hopes “of receiving an aggressive response from law enforcement.”

Jones is booked at the Shasta County Jail for making a false report.
