Butte County Sheriff Jerry Smith says his department has been anticipating this news for a while. Thursday, a panel of three federal judges rejected Governor Jerry Brown's attempt to circumvent its long-standing order to reduce California's prison population. Says Smith, "I think any law enforcement official that's concerned about public safety should be concerned. Do I think the sky is falling? No I don't. Will there be dire consequences? No I don't. We're in the business of accepting challenges, not complaining about them, so we'll make it work." Smith says many inmates will head to big cities, but if they come to Butte County, he'll have to make room for them by bumping someone else, which is what they're doing now anyway.
Governor Brown says he plans to appeal.
