Sheriff's Office warns Butte Co. residents of phone scam

Jun 26, 2014 4:41 PM

The Butte County Sheriff's Office would like to warn residents about a recent phone scam in which someone identifies themselves as a Sheriff's Office employee, and that a warrant will be issued in your name unless a payment is made.

The Sheriff's office say the caller may be using a technique known as "caller ID spoofing" which allows the caller to make their phone number appear to be from the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens they do not make phone calls to inform people of warrants.

If you receive a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a BCSO employee advising of a warrant being issued or requesting payment, do not provide any personal information or credit card numbers. If you receive such a call, please report it to BCSO at (530) 538-7322.
