The Shasta County Sheriff’s office held a press conference at 1:00 p.m. to update the situation at Chaparral Drive. Sheriff Tom Bosenko said a search of the property turned up explosives and explosive precursor materials in excess of 40 pounds.

An evacuation has displaced residents from about a 1,000 ft. radius around 9021 Chaparral Dr. after Sheriff Bosenko declared a local state of emergency last night. During the press conference Sheriff Bosenko said it remains possible the evacuation may be expanded to a 2,000 ft. radius and no timetable has been given as to when residents can return to their homes. Chaparral Drive is closed off by a roadblock just south of Vladimir Court. There is a Red Cross evacuation center set up at Manzanita Elementary School on Manzanita Hills Avenue.

On Thursday evening 63-year-old D Ray East was injured after an explosion occurred in the residence. Investigators say that East, who is in critical, but stable condition, has no prior arrests and no known terrorist connections. His wife has been cooperating with investigators.

The investigation is still considered to be in its early stages.
