The Butte County Sheriff's Office has identified the 12-year-old boy who drowned swimming in a Gridley irrigation canal Tuesday afternoon as Nathanael Long, of Oroville.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon when a group of kids were hanging out in an orchard behind a home on Archer Avenue. Long got his left leg stuck in a tube while swimming. Friends and neighbors had attempted to pull him out, but struggled because of the suction.

Long was pulled out around 3:30 p.m. after being stuck for about 30 minutes. Medics performed CPR and he was rushed to Orchard hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Local kids reportedly swim in the canal regularly, and investigators with the Butte County Sheriff's Office are working to gather more information.
