A Shasta County man has been charged with the murder of his missing father after remains were found in his backyard, investigators with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office said Monday.
According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office James Bland allegedly killed his father Steven Bland, who was reported missing in June.
Steven Bland's relatives reported him missing on June 23. According to them, James Bland dropped him off at the Greyhound station around April 3, 2014, in Redding and told James that if no one heard from him for two months to split up his belongings amongst themselves.
Detectives began an investigation and found no evidence that Steven Bland had ever left the Redding area.
A friend of James Bland came forward and told detectives that James admitted he killed a man over a marijuana deal and dismembered the body. The friend reportedly said James was trying to burn the body, but eventually moved the remains to a wooded area in eastern Shasta County.
Investigators discovered James Bland had been using his father's debit card and he was arrested for grand theft on July 14.
On July 15, 2014 a search warrant was served at the Penrod Way address James had shared with his father. Two gravesites, a human hand, and several burnt bones were found.
James will be formally charged with first degree murder Monday.
