RIDGECREST, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of two hostages taken by a gunman who led officers on a wild chase through the Mojave Desert last week.

The Kern County sheriff's office says 24-year-old Matthew Guidangen and 23-year-old Amanda Garcia were taken hostage by Sergio Munoz last Friday.

Ridgecrest police Sgt. Jed McLaughlin says Munoz put Guidangen in the trunk of a car which he forced Garcia to drive to a house. There Munoz shot and killed one woman and injured a man.

Munoz then forced Garcia into the trunk and soon after began shooting at passing motorists.

Authorities pursued the car and killed Munoz on the side of the highway. The two hostages were wounded by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where they remain in stable condition.
