WAVERLY, Ohio (AP) - The previous boss of a former Ohio sheriff's deputy charged in two separate fatal shootings says the man had problems while working in his department, too.

Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth tells The Columbus Dispatch that Joel Jenkins never made it out of his probationary period when working for him in 2011 and 2012. He says Jenkins was reprimanded for hitting an elderly man with his cruiser at a crosswalk.

Authorities say Jenkins turned himself in on Friday after the former Pike County deputy was indicted in an on-duty killing involving a fleeing driver and an off-duty slaying of his neighbor earlier this month.

Calls to a possible phone number for Jenkins and to his attorney's office on Saturday weren't immediately returned.
