Shasta Regional Medical Center is celebrating its 70th year in business this week.

The hospital opened its doors May 14, 1945, when the population of Redding was just 7,000. The community has now grown to 92,000.

To celebrate, the hospital hosted an ice cream social, gave away t-shirts and gathered on the heliport with community leaders.

In 1995 the hospital celebrated its 50th anniversary with a $35 million expansion. Shasta Regional employs more than 900 registered nurses, 350 doctors and has 246 beds.

The hospital will soon be home to a new 20 bed cognitive, emotional and psychological healthcare facility.
