Two Chico Elementary schools are getting statewide recognition tonight.

Shasta and Neal Dow Elementary Schools received the state Distinguished Schools Award. They are the only two schools in Chico to take the honors.

In all, 400 Elementary Schools won the title out of the 5,758 Elementary Schools in the State of California.

Students at Shasta Elementary School cheered when the principal, Bruce Besnard, made the announcement congratulating students and teachers.

The schools are selected for a number of criteria, including extra curricular activities offered for students at the school. Shasta offers students a learning center, a T.V. station, a lunch-time athletic league and an annual student musical.

Shasta and Neal Dow schools will receive the award in Sacramento June 9th. Shasta is the only school in Chico to receive the award twice. The last time was in 2010.
