Ten California counties, including Shasta County, have settled a civil lawsuit against the nation's largest food distribution company, Sysco Corporation.

Shasta County will share in the multi-million dollar settlement for its help prosecuting the company. Under the settlement Sysco will pay $19 million in restitution, costs and penalties for its illegal practice of holding perishable foods in unrefrigerated sheds while shipping from warehouses to customers such as restaurants and other eateries.

The practice was first brought to light by a NBC Bay Area investigative report last summer.

The Shasta County District Attorney's Office is part of a 10 county California food, drug and medical device task force and will receive $1.5 million for its work on the case.
