A new smoking ordinance banning the indoor use of electronic cigarettes in Shasta County went into effect Friday.

The Shasta County board of supervisors voted unanimously to amend the current smoking ordinance last month. Under the new law the use of electronic smoking devices are now prohibited anywhere smoking is already prohibited.

Health officials say e-cigarettes are not just water vapor, they contain an aerosol of exhaled nicotine equal to or higher than traditional cigarette and several cancer-causing chemicals are also present inside e-cigarette liquid, such as lead and formaldehyde.

E-cigarettes are currently not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
