On this day, 74 years ago, Shasta County resident George Stevens was in Hawaii fighting for his life and he remembers it like it was yesterday.
Stevens, a soldier in the U.S. Army, was on his way back from Honolulu when his relaxing day off turned into one of the deadliest days in U.S. history.
While racing back to base, he came face to face with a Japanese fighter plane. “I was so lucky and I think he ran out of bullets because he let me go,” Stevens said.
He describes what he saw on his way to the barracks that day as nothing short of a nightmare.
Stevens will be 96-years-old on Dec. 26, and is one of four Pearl Harbor survivors living in Shasta County.
