Shasta County man shot during early morning dispute

A Shasta County man is in critical condition after he was shot during an early morning dispute in the Mountain Gate area Thursday.

Sheriff's deputies were called to Shasta Regional Medical Center when a gunshot victim, identified as James Fields Jr., arrived around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Less than a half-hour later 27-year-old Alex Baughn called Shascom and told dispatchers he had shot Fields.

Baughn told detectives he shot Fields in the torso after he showed up at his home on Tunnel Road, in the Mountain Gate area, with a baseball bat a began causing a disturbance.

The sheriff's office says the shooting is an isolated incident between Baughn and Fields, and an investigation is ongoing. At this time no arrests have been made.
