A Shasta County man is facing a felony child abuse charge after he allegedly beat a teenager over bad test scores.

According to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, Leslie Herrick and a 15-year-old Foothill High School student got into an argument over the girl’s test scores Wednesday afternoon.

A school resource officer launched an investigation Thursday when he learned of the alleged.

The investigation revealed that during their argument, Herrick tried to cut the girls hair with a pair of scissors, then pinned her on the ground and slapped her at least ten times. One of the slaps was so severe the girl told investigators she was blinded for about 20 seconds. Herrick then forced the girl to do wall squats, and pulled her hair.

Authorities say the girl ended up with red marks to her face and a black eye.

Herrick was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of felony child abuse.
