If the IRS calls, hang-up. Emergency dispatchers in Shasta County have received more than 100 calls Wednesday regarding an Internal Revenue Service telephone scam.

The scam is the latest fraud attempt involving callers claiming to be with the IRS.

The impersonators threaten people with arrest, deportation or suspension of a driver's license if they don't pay back taxes.

The callers tell victims they must pay debts through a wire transfer or preloaded debit card. Some callers trick victims into sharing bank account or Social Security numbers.

The Redding Police Department is reminding people that the IRS will never call requesting payments. If back taxes are owed the IRS will send you a letter.

If you receive one of the calls, hang up and report it on the IRS website.
