Shasta County deputy's stolen rifle recovered, handgun and tactical gear still missing

A rifle stolen from the personal vehicle of an off-duty Shasta County sheriff’s deptuty has been recovered, but a handgun and tactical gear are still missing.

The Shasta County sheriff’s office told Action News Now on Tuesday that a Colt M4 law enforcement tactical rifle stolen in Redding last week has been recovered after authorities received a tip thorugh Shasta County Secret Witness.

On the night of Tuesday November 10, or the morning of Wednesday November 11 a thief broke into the deputy’s locked car and stole the rifle and a Springfield 1911 .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. The deputy’s duty belt which contained handcuffs, pepper spray, and a baton.

No arrests have been made and authorities have not identified a person of interest.

The piston and belt are still missing and anyone with information is asked to call the Redding Police Department or Shasta County Secret Witness.

Sheriff’s officials will not say whether or not the weapons were properly stored in the deputy’s car, but did say they are handling the matter internally and the deputy remains on duty.
