Shasta Co. inmate attempts escape during trip to doctor

An inmate of the Shasta County Jail was transported to Mercy Maternity Care to receive medical care for her pregnancy, but she attempted to escape while being escorted out of the building.

According to a press release Sharilyn Carmen, 26, ran from the deputy escorting her. During the pursuit Carmen was able to slip one wrist out of her handcuffs.

A deputy caught Carmen in a field area near Waldon and Lincoln Streets, but she continued to resist arrest. She punched and bit the deputy as he tried to place handcuffs on her. Carmen also attempted to grab the deputy’s gun.

Redding Police arrived and Carmen was wrestled into custody and transported back to jail.

Carmen is in custody for a robbery, but additional charges of resisting arrest, assault on a correctional officer and attempting to escape custody will be sought against her.
